Type of Printing and Cost

The Makerbot Sketch uses FDM technology as its foundation for 3D printing. It is the most accessible 3D printing technology.

The reason for this is that it is simple. The 3D printing procedure begins with a filament spool of the material one wants to print a component or working prototype.

The procedure of heating it to its glass transition heat begins once it is placed in a holder for filament spool.

On reaching this stage and ready to melt, it is transported to the print bed via the nozzle system.

How the melted material is placed on the print bed is determined by the dimensions of the component or working prototype. This is supplied when one loads the slicer file in the printer for the object.

The printing of that object begins, layer on layer, until the 3D print of the object is complete. After that, the cooling of the entire component or working prototype begins.

Next, one has to remove the structures used for supporting the component or working prototype. The balance portion is then made available for post-processing work. 

The price to print a single component is determined by many factors. To begin with, one has to account for the dimensions of the component or the working prototype to be printed. 

Next comes the material cost of the filament that is used to print the component. Then one has to quantify the fillers for the component, the number of support structures needed for modeling the component, and so on.

The overall cost of producing a 3D part using FDM technology is significantly lower than that compared to the cost involved in other 3D printing methods.

Quality of Printing

Thanks to the Sketch, every component or working prototype that one wants to 3D print can have a layer resolution of 100-400 microns. 

In light of the low cost of this 3D printer and the FDM printing technology employed, the range of layer resolution is considered optimal.

Surface finishing on the printed components and working prototypes are superb.
