BIQU the Manufacturer

[ BIQU B1 Review ]

BIQU is a producer of low-cost 3D printers using FDM print technology. It also manufactures replacement parts.

The company founded in 2015, is from Shenzhen, China. It has a good reputation for its customer-focused strategy. And also maintains a strong focus on client-manufacturer links, overlooked by larger corporations.

Of course, the 3D printers are not completely improved in response to user feedback. They do use client feedback to introduce features for improving the printing experience.

The BIQU B1 and BIQU Thunder are the company’s current consumer-grade FDM 3D printers. Both come bundled as 3D printer kits. Which means they must be assembled by the users.

Product Overview

[ BIQU B1 Review ]

BIQU’s B1 comes with a hefty build volume of 235mm x 235mm x 270 mm. This allows the 3D printer to produce an entire medium-sized print model or numerous smaller models at the same time. The layer thickness of 50 microns (minimum) is excellent for a 3D printer with FDM print technology for the buy price.

A notable feature of the BIQU B1 is its removable 4 mm heat bed made of thin spring steel. This aids easy removal of prints and gives outstanding layer adhesion.

It comes bundled with a Bowden-type extruder. This extruder has a flexible RGB LED lighting as well as a fully metallic nozzle. The nozzle can reach 260°C in temperature.

There is a filament sensor to indicate run-out and a BLTouch holder that comes preinstalled. The motherboard is a proprietary 32-bit version. There is also a control screen with touch screen or rotary knob mode that can be adjusted.

The B1 allows users to feed G-code commands manually through the touchscreen. This does not need to connect the printer to anything else.

Unpacking the Box

[ BIQU B1 Review ]

A normal cardboard box houses the 3D printer equipment. The print base holds most of the electronic parts required to manage the printer. Also included are two large gantries that help the extruder and a collection of other printer elements. All of these items are securely packed.

The following is a complete list of the things contained in the supply kit:

  • 3D printer kit
  • Spool holder
  • USB stick
  • Power cord
  • Scraper
  • Extra nozzles
  • Toolbox
  • User Guide
  • Warranty card

a. BLTouch Probe

A BLTouch probe for automatic bed leveling is an important improvement for the BIQU B1. There is a dedicated socket to connect the mod. The probes are not expensive at all.

A correctly functioning BLTouch probe allows users to save a significant amount of time by not having to manually calibrate the system. The BLTouch probe is simple to set up, so give it a shot.

b. Extruder of Direct Drive Type

For safe printing with ABS and other filaments that print at high temperature, it is advisable to replace the Bowden-type extruder.

As an alternative, a direct drive extruder can prevent degradation of the PTFE tubing that comes with the stock assembly. These direct drive extruders are available for not more than $30, so better to check it out.

c. Build Area Enclosure

For safety and consistent output using ABS filaments, get an enclosure for the BIQU B1.

Maintaining the correct temperature inside the chamber, improves design safety. It also improves the quality of the printed models.

Excellent Design

[ BIQU B1 Review ]

The BIQU B1 is a 3D printer of medium size geared for the desktop with a solid build. It measures 570mm x 450mm x 340 mm externally and weighs about 11 kg or 24 pounds. There are twin color options available for the machine.

The first color is a fashion styled pink. The major sections of the printer have a coat of light pink color to give it a unique appearance. This gives the 3D printer a homely and refreshing look.

Another color option is pitch black. While not eye popping like the pink shade, it does give the BIQU B1 a more classic and elegant aesthetic feel.

The b1 has a fully-metallic structure and a belt pulley that supports the Z-axis with a higher performance. The print head receives support from rods having bearings of linear shape, resulting in a lighter unit.

Right ahead of the printer base is an in-built control screen. It has a simple easy to use interface with easy controls because it is simple and customizable. Additionally, the user can choose the UI language from a list of 15 options.

The system comes fitted with powerful fans for cooling permitting the printer to function properly.  These fans prevent any overheating difficulties. The leveling knobs beneath the built plate are wide and simple to reach, ensuring a quick and painless calibration.

Salient Features

[ BIQU B1 Review ]

Let us look at some of the important features the BIQU b1 comes with.

a. Removable heat bed

The built plate on the BIQU B1 is textured spring steel coated and can withstand a temperature of 100°C, when heated.

It’s a delicately made magnet that’s only 4 mm thick. By keeping the first layers hot, it ensures layer bonding and easy print removal.

This reduces the number of warping-related difficulties that could ruin the entire print. It also broadens the range of filaments the printer can handle. Clearly necessary for a smoother experience when printing.

As one can see, the heat bed’s surface is even, therefore there will be no issues with calibration. A layer of thermal material for insulation is also present underneath.

b. Details of Extruder and Hot end

A Bowden-type extruder with single gear and a metal nozzle is included with the BIQU B1. It can withstand up to 260°C, which is good enough for ABS, PLA, TPU, and other filaments of 1.75 mm.

To print with materials at higher temperature, the machine has to be fitted with a direct drive extruder. The PTFE tube may start degrading, releasing toxic fumes if the temperature goes above 240°C.

For greater retraction, backlash reduction, and responsiveness, a direct drive extruder is a must.

A bunch of radial fans cool the prints for ventilation, while using just one air duct. If one wants to improve airflow, print two air ducts separately and manually upgrade the assembly design.

Another interesting feature is a Type-C USB plug socket behind the B1’s hot end. The connection is made via a little breakout board placed inside the hot end, which will come in handy if one has to replace the entire assembly.

c. RGB LED lighting that can be adjusted

For late-night print sessions and brilliant colors, the design possibilities are astounding.  One can illuminate the rotating knob button to different colors.

Select from white, red, purple, green, orange, yellow, and blue. If one wants, they can also illuminate the extruder assembly with a color using the control screen.

d. Mainboard with 32-bit processing power

A company developed SKR 1.4 mainboard powers the BIQU b1. It comes with TMC2225 stepper motor drivers for very quiet operation. The mainboard is one among the most powerful on the market. It is also part of 3D printer kits to upgrade less powerful models.

A small yet powerful 4010 fan cools the mainboard. Furthermore, there is a second driver slot that allows users to add another extruder. This allows users to print in a variety of colors and duplicates, significantly cutting print time.

e. Filament Runout Sensor with Resume Printing

The BIQU B1 has an intelligent sensor to detect filament run out and a resume printing capability.

Printing stops in case the filament breaks or there is insufficient filament to print. In case of a power blackout, the printing will be paused, allowing users to resume from exactly the pause point when power is back.

This capability is quite beneficial for printing large models. And avoid having to start over if something goes wrong.

f. TMC2225 Silent Drivers and 32-bit Board

A SKR 1.4 mainboard with TMC2225 stepper motor drivers for very quiet operation of the BIQU B1.

This offers consistent results and a low noise environment.

g. Printing with High Quality

The BIQU B1’s fully-metallic extruder ensures slick extrusion and long-term durability. The twin fan duct for cooling ensures high-quality prints. The print space is 235mm x 235mm x 270 mm.

h. Sprint Steel Print Bed

The textured surface of the B1’s spring steel bed offers good bed adherence and quick print removal. The bed is also convertible, allowing printing on both sides. This can exponentially extend the life of the machine.

i. Cool Touchscreen Interface

B1’s have a TFT35 V3.0 touchscreen in full color for operating the circuits of its motherboard.

The G-code interface and the Model preview are way beyond the standard settings and data monitoring functions found on budget printers.

With the open-source firmware (from BIQU’s GitHub repository), one can customize the UI using 15 different languages.

But it’s the B1’s dual operating system, which makes it unique. This is why the cool touchscreen has a knob on its side.
