Who is Artillery?

Artillery was established in 2018 as an additive manufacturing company. They are based in Shenzen. The current offering is three FDM 3D printers that are consumer-grade. In January 2019, Sidewinder X1 was released into market by Artillery. The X1 is a 3D printer that was well received by the community for its features and price. The company then released The Genius. This printer has a smaller build volume than the X1, but is similarly budget friendly. The Hornet is the latest printer in their arsenal. It is an entry-level printer that can be used in education. The Artillery Sidewinder X1 is a consumer-grade printer that has a 300 X 300 X 400 mm (11.8 X 11.8 X 15.7 inches) build volume. This makes it fit to print large format 3D projects. As the printer is under the $500 mark, you will have to assemble it and calibrate it manually. The printer comes in 2 parts. There is the main base where all the internals are. Then there are the gantries that the extruder rests on. The printer can be swiftly set up by a person who’s used to 3D printers. The minimum layer height is 100 microns and this is standard for 3D printers at this price range. This enables you to print detailed prints with great surface finishes. The X1 has titan based single direct drive extruder, large build object volume and a heated bed. It can also use a wide variety of materials like PLA, ABS, TPU, WOOD, PVA, and flexible materials. The printer is a great choice for personal applications with a print speed of 150 mm/s and a wide variety of material choices.

Printing with ABS won’t be very reliable until an enclosure is added to prevent temperature fluctuations. This also will help avoid misprints on the upper layers. The enclosure can be ordered online or can be manufactured at home without much hassle. The advantage of a printer that isn’t closed is customization and constant upgrading. The printer can be fitted with different upgrades like enclosures, BLTouch probe for automatic bed leveling, stepper motor dampers and so on. These make the printer much easier to use.

Build Volume and Heat Bed

The sidewinder X1 has a 310 X 310mm glass coated texture bed that results in large format prints. Layer bonding is enhanced and can create PLA prints without heating the bed. The bed can be heated up to 60C in just 50 seconds. It also takes less 2.5 mins to heat up to 100C. The heating speed is quite good for the size of the bed. The maximum temperature of the build plate is 130C

The build plate is even and has leveling knobs installed to ensure that the process is easy and quick. Removing the printed objects is sometimes hard. The solution is to leave it on the bed heated up to 70-80 for up to minute or so. After that, a knife can be used to put it underneath your print and detach it after the plate cools downs. 

Direct Drive Extruder

A direct drive titan extruder sits on the printer and contains a nozzle whose temperature can raise up to 240C within 3 minutes. The X1 has a wide variety of materials that can be used and is great when printing flexible filaments. It leads to better extrusion and needs less torque. This also reduces stringing and oozing and more such issues. The X1’s extruder could have been better. An aluminium-based heatsink that is attached to the mount isn’t the best cooling system. While your prints aren’t affected, it makes the process harder and it seems outdated. 

Since there is a lot of options for upgradability though and this can be upgraded or replaced once it’s time to replace the heatsink

Resume Printing Function and Filament Runout Sensor

The Artillery Sidewinder X1 is streamlined for 3D printing with great features like the resume printing function. The resume printing function prints from the same point where it has stopped during a power failure. This ensures that you can print at anytime without having to start from the base up

The sensor, on the other hand, is below the spool holder. It sense for tangled or broken filament and immediately stops the print in case of a problem.

The X1 features a build space of 300 X 300 X400mm. This provides ample space for projects of any size!

Dual Z-axis

You are guaranteed high precision and synchronous movement with the dual z-axis. This way, even if one Z-axis motor fails or stops, the X-Carriage will always move parallel to the building board

Let’s build the Artillery Sidewinder X1. First, the gantry needs to be installed on the main base

Next, the gantry needs to be fastened by screwing four screws

Next, the Z-axis wires should be connected and the ribbon cable under the extruder cover should be attached

The spool holder should then be fixed on the gantry and the filament runout sensor should be installed. The device can be powered on after this, then the install of the filament spool should be done and the calibration process can be initiated with the help of the touchscreen

It is advised to test the machine once before starting projects

The assembly can be done in less than 20 minutes by a veteran 3D user, but it is simple to do with care even for new users

The Artillery Sidewinder X1 is greatly inspired by the Creality CR-10 but managed to make it thinner and more beautiful. Even though inspiration has been taken, the X1 is a machine that stands on its own. The base unit contains the mainboard, touchscreen, and power supply, which gives it a uniform and beautiful look, while making things more user friendly

The X1 also uses ribbon cables to organise and clear up cable clutter which is present in a lot of competitive products. The Artillery Sidewinder X1 is leagues ahead of the competition when it comes to the design and looks of its competitors

The previous versions of the X1 had complicated cables and they would wear out and tear due to the constant movement of the printer. This version, on the other hand, ensures that there will be no problems with cable tear. The company listened to feedback form the community and fixed the cable problems and even threw in extra ribbon cables to ensure your printer is always functional

The X1 has a feature that not a lot of printers in this price range have. A sturdy and useful X-axis rail. The direct drive setup is supported by a 20 X 60mm extrusion lend.

A dual lead screw design operate the Z-axis and it ensures that things are synchronised by using anti-backlash nuts. While dual end stops would be more efficient, this system works well for the price range of the printer. It does more than its competitors in almost every aspect.

The 20 X 40mm extrusions on the base unit is screwed in by four screws. This ensures that the Z-axis doesn’t wobble and helps greatly with tall build space. An angle connector would improve the structure and prevent additional wobbling and the X1 wobbles a bit to the top. That might be the only problem with the build as it is beautiful and sturdy otherwise

Print Bed

The Artillery Sidewinder X1 offers a better than average print bed size of 300 X 300 X 400mm. The place where it shows off the most is the ability to go from zero to printing in less than a minute. The print bed also heats up much faster than other printers. The heater is mounted under the glass and there is no plate in between them. It also is AC heated and is one of the only printers to heat with 220/110V

The con of this method is that there is a risk of electric shock, but all the wires are insulated so it shouldn’t really be an issue. The official specs state that the bed can go up to 80C,  but it actually can go up to 120C. The only problem is that the bed is cooler on the edges which can cause adhesion problems. The glass plate offer great adhesion as it expands and shrinks according to the heat, and it helps the print come off easily. The bed is not removable, though. That is something to keep in mind.

The Artillery Sidewinder X1 comes with a Volcano hot end and direct drive Titan Aero extruder. Direct Drive extruders usually come at higher price ranges, so it really shows how good the Artillery X1 is. The hot end too heats up very quickly and it goes to 270C instead of the mentioned 240C. To be on the safer side, it is advised to use it at 250C maximum as the cold end could break at higher temperatures. The Volcano hot end has extended melt zones that lead to high flow rates and enables the use of the nozzle with up to 1mm diameter. It also has two fans but the fan that helps cool the prints doesn’t do the job well enough. A fan duct alternative could help with this problem

UI and Connectivity

The UI of the Artillery Sidewinder X1 is through a touchscreen of 3.5 inches. Much like other features, this touchscreen is something that is found in higher priced models. It is very user friendly and offers all options on the touchscreen as opposed to its competitors, who only allow a small number through the screen. It also has support for USB and micro SD card which makes connectivity a breeze. You can either connect a PC directly through USB or save files onto a card for later use

While the performance is great, an alternate fan system might be needed for cooling the prints. Swapping the filament is also a problem as it is complicated. If only one brand of filament is used though, they can be adjusted with screws and left there easily. If multiple brands of filament are used, the holder needs to be adjusted constantly. It is hard to reach when the printer is against a wall. PLA is the best choice and prints come out great even at faster speeds

Printing with PETG creates a few problems, even with the way the X1 handles temperatures. This doesn’t mean the Artillery Sidewinder X1 is the problem, though, ass PETG has problems with Volcano hot ends. This can be prevented by changing retraction settings and using the CURA coasting feature. Be warned as this doesn’t fix all problems. 

The X1’s direct drive extruder has no feeding problems with flexible filaments. The Artillery Sidewinder X1 can print with a variety of materials, but PLA seems to be the best option

The Final Verdict

The Artillery Sidewinder X1 is a great 3D Printer Machine that is sturdy and comes in a semi-assembled state. It has large build volume, a variety of materials that can be used, and a great number of features for a great printing experience. It is easy to use and offers features that blow away the competition. It needs to be assembled and calibrated, but that isn’t a problem at all. The design is not perfect, the cooling fan for example, but the value for the price is amazing! The Artillery Sidewinder X1 is a great machine for small businesses or educational institutes. It can also be used by hobbists easily. It can be used to make everything from household items to props to figurines and much more.
