One cannot find in the rest of the budget 3D printers what the Artillery Genius has to offer.

Unpacking and Setting Up

The Artillery Genius comes in a sturdy box made out of cardboard. The box was packed with black color foam for protecting both the printer and keeping it motionless in the box.

On Un-Packing, the following items were found in the box:

  • Gantry  on the X and Z-axis 
  • Bed with a base on the Y-axis
  • User Manual and warranty
  • Tools and spare items such as Allen keys etc.

Despite the lack of clarity in the user manual, assembling the Artillery Genius was quite straightforward. The gantry and the base are the only two pieces that are the assembly core.

Artillery Genius Review

Following are some amazing parts of the Artillery Genius and their functions: 

a. Extruder with Direct Drive and Volcano Style Hotend

The Artillery Genius uses an extruder with a direct drive. Most other budget 3D like the Prusa Mini use Bowden-type extruders.

Extruders with a direct drive deliver superior print output. Hence, a greater number of high-end printers are going for it too.

Filaments of the flexible variety work fantastic with direct-drive extruders. But they have issues with Bowden-tube systems.

The Volcano style hotend makes it easier to print and is also more dependable. It heats up the filament earlier and more uniformly than typical hotends.  Thus, there is less congestion and consistently better output from the filament.

One may get a jammed hotend when printing 0.6mm broad layer patterns using a nozzle of 0.4mm on a filament of marble. 

One will most certainly get solid little chunks that become trapped. Unless one selects the standard settings for printing on a marble-type filament.

b. Stepper Motors for Quiet printing

Because of the silent stepper motors, the Artillery Genius works extremely quietly for a 3D printer. The fans produce little noise, but it isn’t excessive. Yet it is not so quiet that one can sleep in the printer room.

When working with filaments that are low on heat requirement (not PLA as it needs 100% cooling), the Artillery Genius hums through when printing.

Deploying an ultra-quiet fan such as from Noctua may still not help much with the noise level.

c. Leveling of Print Bed

Manual bed leveling turns out to be exactly adequate. It takes very little time and is yet highly accurate.

If one has to use nozzles of different sizes, then using ABL filament is ideal. It definitely does save time for the user if not result in more accurate prints. Adding ABL is made simple due to the connector pin on the extruder.

It is best if one can 3D print a filament holder of the BLtouch type using a Waggster mod and also renew the firmware.

d. Warmed Up Print Bed

One of the coolest things users will find with the Artillery Genius is the Print bed.

Typically 3D printers link up the heat bed to a 12/24V cable. But, with the Artillery Genius,  the heat bed is connected to the power supply (110/230V) for quicker heating.

This is certainly useful if one keeps switching between prints more often, such as while testing or creating prototypes.

There is less waiting time, and it feels good if prints come out faster and more often. This may seem an insignificant thing and yet it helps users keep an eye on printing rather than the printer setup.

As it’s a glass bed, the print sticks well on the bed, though sometimes a bit too much. Thus, one will have to configure settings for arriving at the right filament temperature. Otherwise, one will find the filament glued to the print bed.

e. Printing using Touch enabled Menus

A color TFT touch-enabled screen is a pleasant addition to the Artillery Genius. This is much more superior compared to the dial knob used on the Prusa MK3S or Ender 3. 

The Touch Screen may not be as user-friendly as the one on a smartphone. Still, it is adequate enough to select the large well-organized menu options.  Yet, there could be a lot of improvement with the touchscreen and UI.

The print menu, as an example, does not always identify the USB device right away. One has to keep hitting on “Print” a couple of times until the files appear.

It also lacks space for displaying the complete title of a print file. This makes it tedious to locate a specific file unless one taps on a particular file to view the complete name.

Another minor inconvenience is that the screen doesn’t show what amount of time the print will need to finish when one is printing. 

The % is shown, even though it is founded on the Z-stature. Every rate point takes about a similar measure of time in case you have a block or square shape. 

Nonetheless, assuming your shape is pyramidal, 0-50 percent will take significantly longer than 50 to 100%. This ought to be connected to the real print time. 

Regardless, they are minor imperfections, and the menu works agreeably overall. One may likewise modify it with a firmware update.

f. Cable management and ribbon cables

The outstanding wire management is one feature that distinguishes the Artillery Genius from other prints in this price range.

The cables are carefully stored inside the printer, and ribbon cables are utilised to make a connection with the stepper motors to the extruder.

This is not just cleaner and more polished, but it is also more secure. It demonstrates that Artillery is meticulous.

The ends of the ribbon cables can be a bit touchy for some folks, but one can fortify them with a printed fix. An extra ribbon cable is included with the printer in case one breaks.

g. Sensor to Detect Filament Runout

The sensor to detect filament runout is another helpful function. This detects when there is no more filament, as the name says.

The printer will immediately stop printing if the filament spool does not have any filament when printing.

Then one can continue printing by adding a new filament. From the menu, one can also manually pause and resume printing.

However, extreme caution must be exercised to ensure that the transitions are error-free, as well as that the filament does not escape the nozzle in the interim.

h. Holder for Filament Spool

Artillery Genius’ spool holders aren’t the best. The design, while well-intentioned, is not very practical.

Traditional “bar” spool holders, like those used on the Prusa MK3S, have the disadvantage of producing friction when the plastic passes over them.

To counteract this, a few users choose to make use of bearings, which geniuses also have. There are two portions to the holder, each having its own set of front and back bearings.

The spool isn’t suspended from the rod-like in many other printers; instead, it sits on top of these bearings.

These bearings are a great idea in general since they reduce friction and make it easier for the spool to rotate.

The spool holder has two drawbacks. It’s not very well fixed, can be moved around during printing, and only supports “standard” spool sizes.

The two halves are separated by a small amount, but not enough to support a huge spool.

One also can’t move far enough to fit a little spool in (as in 500g). Users couldn’t use a conventional spool holder because the first two spools weighed 500g, so it is better to print a new one right away. 

This is a fantastic approach. Other alternatives to the original holder exist, but one can’t use a very large spool with them.

Final Verdict

Artillery Genius 3D Printer Review

The Artillery Genius 3D Printer has great promise. Yet, it is pertinent to note that to obtain excellent quality from the machine, one has to change the slicer settings a bit.

The results are certainly acceptable after around 10 hours of usage, but some fine-tuning may be necessary. Extra test prints demonstrate exceptional accuracy and quality.

Only two issues were visible, the first of which was a little banding on the z-axis. The second, more subtle issue is that there are no details defined parallel to the Y-axis.

Due to the imbalance in bed weight, this could imply that the default printing speed is too rapid.

It is surprising how fast both the heat bed and nozzle warm up. Also pleasantly surprising is the cable management capability.

But, one has to wait patiently to get the best results with this device.
